Blogging is fun. I love telling stories, writing book reviews, sharing tips for raising readers. But when content doesn't come as easily as it used to, and months go by between posts, I feel like I've let myself and my readers down.

I'm going to park this blog for a bit. Maybe I'll come back to it, maybe I'll start fresh somewhere else (update: find me here!). Since books are still (and will always be) a huge part of my life, I'll still be heavily active on social media -- you can find me at the links below.
Hattie & Hudson by Chris Van Dusen
May 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "Hattie McFadden is a born explorer. Every morning she grabs her life jacket and paddles out in her canoe to discover something new on the lake, singing a little song on her way. When her singing draws up from the depths a huge mysterious beast, everyone in town is terrified — except Hattie, who looks into the creature’s friendly, curious eyes and knows that this is no monster. So Hattie sneaks out at night to see the giant — whom she names Hudson — and the two become friends. But how can she make the frightened, hostile townspeople see that Hudson isn’t scary or dangerous at all? Chris Van Dusen brings his colorful, perspective-bending artwork to this satisfying new story about acceptance, friendship, and sticking up for those who are different."

My thoughts: I looove Chris Van Dusen's work. This book has a great storyline to go along with the beautiful pictures, encouraging kids to stand up for what they know is right, even if adults don't seem to agree.
The Catawampus Cat
by Jason Carter Eaton & Gus Gordon
March 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "catawampus (cat-a-wam-pus) n. 1. Diagonal or at an angle. 2. Askew, awry.
The catawampus cat walks with a slant. And his skewed point of view has everyone in town looking at everything with fresh eyes. Even Bushy Brows Billiam who never notices anything, including what time class is over, spots the catawampus cat, and now he’s a star student! And when the town librarian sees the catawampus cat, she pulls the “wrong” book from the shelf, sending her into a life of adventure. The catawampus cat is in town and everything is about to change."

My thoughts: This is a cute book that encourages us to look at life from different angles. Who knows what we might discover! I kept wanting to tilt my head as I was reading. :) The ending was predictable, but still fun.
Go Sleep in Your Own Bed!
by Candace Fleming & Lori Nichols
May 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "This funny and irresistible picture book feels like a classic in the making. When Pig plops into his sty at bedtime, he finds Cow fast asleep in his spot. "Go sleep in your own bed!" he squeals, and sends her packing. But when Cow finally snuggles down into her stall, she finds Hen sleeping there. So begins a chain reaction of snoozing barnyard animals being awakened and sent off to their own beds, until every last one is in just the right place. Young children will delight in repeating the refrain "Go sleep in your own bed!" and laugh at the antics of these hilarious—and very sleepy—farm animals."

My thoughts: I can see this being super fun as a read-aloud, with all of the goofy noises the animals make. Plus the children's librarian in me imagines this as an interactive book, using stuffed animals, flannel board pieces, etc. I figured out early on how the book would end, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.
From Amazon: "The best thing about flight school is that Little Plane gets to learn how to sky-write! He adores practicing ARCS! He excels at practicing DIVES!

We're All Wonders by R.J. Palacio
March 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "Over 6 million people have fallen in love with Wonder and have joined the movement to Choose Kind. Now younger readers can meet Auggie Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face, and his beloved dog, Daisy. Countless fans have asked R. J. Palacio to write a book for younger readers. With We’re All Wonders, she makes her picture-book debut as both author and artist, with a spare, powerful text and striking, richly imagined illustrations. Palacio shows readers what it’s like to live in Auggie’s world—a world in which he feels like any other kid, but he’s not always seen that way. We’re All Wonders may be Auggie’s story, but it taps into every child’s longing to belong, and to be seen for who they truly are. It’s the perfect way for families and educators to talk about empathy and kindness with young children."

My thoughts: I'll admit I've never read the original middle-grade book Wonder -- even though it came out while I was a youth librarian. I know the basic idea of the story, and the message seems to be beautifully portrayed in this picture book. With more and more bullying happening to kids, I'm realizing how important it is to teach my own kids about being kind to everyone, even those who seem to be different than us.

Recommended Age: 4-8 years, but the message is easily understood by younger kids
The Thing Lou Couldn't Do
by Ashley Spires May 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "This delightful picture book perfectly depicts what children go through when confronted with something difficult. With humor and endearing artwork, Spires sensitively portrays Lou procrastinating, making excuses, imagining alternatives and denying she cares. Ultimately, Lou faces her fear, and although she fails, the effort empowers her, encouraging a growth mindset. All the while, Lou's friends model compassionate friendship by offering to teach her how to climb and then moving the game. This book makes a perfect choice for a character education discussion about courage or resilience, or a life-skills lesson on facing challenges. The story also promotes the joy of imaginative play in the outdoors.

My thoughts: My kids often tell me "I can't do it." Often something is too difficult, or they're scared. This book is great for encouraging kids to just try. And even if they fail, hey at least they tried! I also like how Lou's friends encourage her, instead of teasing or getting angry, as I often feel like doing when my kids offer excuse after excuse for why they won't try something.
She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World
by Chelsea Clinton & Alexandra Boiger
May 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "Throughout American history, there have always been women who have spoken out for what's right, even when they have to fight to be heard... She Persisted is for everyone who has ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who has ever tried to reach for the stars but was told to sit down, and for everyone who has ever been made to feel unworthy or unimportant or small... This book features: Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Clara Lemlich, Nellie Bly, Virginia Apgar, Maria Tallchief, Claudette Colvin, Ruby Bridges, Margaret Chase Smith, Sally Ride, Florence Griffith Joyner, Oprah Winfrey, Sonia Sotomayor—and one special cameo."

My thoughts: This book is a great way to introduce young kids to a handful of important women in history. It includes an introductory page, then the 13 women -- each with a short paragraph about their troubles, "she persisted" highlighted in the story, and a quote from the woman -- then a concluding page. I even learned a few things. :)
A Perfect Day by Lane Smith
February 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "Today is a perfect day for Cat, Dog, Chickadee, and Squirrel. Cat is lounging among the daffodils. Dog is sitting in the wading pool, deep in the cool water. Chickadee is eating fresh seed from the birdfeeder. Squirrel is munching on his very own corncob. Today is a perfect day in Bert's backyard. Until Bear comes along, that is. Bear crushes the daffodils, drinks the pool water, and happily gobbles up the birdseed and corncob. Today was a perfect day for Cat, Dog, Chickadee, and Squirrel. Now, it's just a perfect day for Bear. Lane Smith uses perfect pacing and vibrant illustrations to emphasize the power of perspective in this hilarious picture book about the goings-on in Bert's backyard."

My thoughts: Sometimes we think our day is going great, then something happens to upset it all. I chuckled when the bear arrived on the scene. The illustrations in this book are very full of texture, adding interest to an otherwise very simple story. Don't forget to check out the picture on the back flap (where it describes the author).

From Amazon: "Charlotte is a serious scientist. She solves important problems by following the scientific method. She has all the right equipment: protective glasses, a lab coat, a clipboard, and a magnifying glass. What she doesn’t have is space. She has so many brothers and sisters (she is a rabbit, after all) that she is too squished to work on her experiments! Can she use science to solve her problem? This funny, satisfying story is a playful introduction to the scientific method and perfect for sparking an interest in STEM subjects."

My thoughts: I loved two things about this book: 1) It actually goes through the steps of the scientific method to solve Charlotte's problem, and the back of the book even encourages kids to follow the steps to answer their own question and write to Charlotte about it. 2) Introverts of the world unite!! :)

My thoughts: This fun board book series is one that Usborne Books & More is well known for. With simple pictures, bold black lines, touchy-feely things and a mouse to find on every page, they are great for introducing babies to books. Emma and the Whale
by Julie Case & Lee White
March 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "Emma lives in a crooked house in an old whaling town, and often takes her dog, Nemo, to the beach. On their walks, they find amazing treasures, like shells and stones and sea glass—and even a loggerhead turtle. But one day, they find something completely unexpected: a baby whale, washed ashore. Emma empathizes with the animal’s suffering, imagining what the whale is thinking and feeling. When the tide starts to come in, Emma pushes as the water swirls and rises, and eventually the whale swims free, back to her mother."
My thoughts: Not my favorite picture book (the storyline was a little boring for me) but the subdued illustrations are beautiful.
Garcia & Colette Go Exploring
by Hannah Barnaby. June 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "Best friends Garcia and Colette are eager to go exploring, only they can’t agree on where to go. Garcia loves everything about space (Stars! Planets!) and Colette is obsessed with the sea (Waves! Fish!). Staying home is not an option, so they each get busy. Garcia builds a rocket ship that’s snazzy and silver. Colette’s shiny submarine is perfect for deep-sea dives. And they wish each other well on their travels. It turns out the Milky Way really is amazing and the ocean floor is truly spectacular, but Garcia and Colette both realize they left something very important back home. Exploring your favorite place can be terrific, but maybe the company is more important than the destination."

My thoughts: The premise of this book is actually something I do with my two girls from time to time. If they can't agree on an activity to do together, I send them off to play separately. Inevitably they end up deciding they'd rather try to compromise and find something to do together after all.
Little Fox in the Forest
by Stephanie Graegin. February 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "When a young girl brings her beloved stuffed fox to the playground, much to her astonishment, a real fox takes off with it! The girl chases the fox into the woods with her friend, the boy, following close behind, but soon the two children lose track of the fox. Wandering deeper and deeper into the forest, they come across a tall hedge with an archway. What do they find on the other side? A marvelous village of miniature stone cottages, tiny treehouses, and, most extraordinary of all, woodland creatures of every shape and size. But where is the little fox? And how will they find him?"

My thoughts: At first I was unsure of this as a book to read with my kids, as it's a wordless book. The story is told completely through pictures. But the more I paged through it on my own, the more I loved it. It's obviously not great for a true read-aloud, but as a way to get my kids to describe the pictures and tell the story themselves? It's awesome. I also loved the difference in black & white pictures at the beginning of the book and the color that appears partway through (a bit Wizard-of-Oz-ish).

From Amazon: "Do you ever feel like everything is terrible? Like nothing is ever right and you just want to hide under your pillow? Well Rabbit does, and he's not shy about sharing it. He whines, he complains, he moans, he grumps... until Bear has had enough and decides it's time for Rabbit to learn to appreciate what he has. Using nothing but the lowly common earthworm as an example, he teaches Rabbit a lesson about taking things for granted. Something the worm knows all about... Written in charming verse and featuring a delightfully domestic bear and a very surly rabbit, There, There is a fantastic tongue-in-cheek riff on the idea that 'it could be worse...'"

My thoughts: My 5-year-old has become quite the complainer lately, and it's hard for us to not lose our tempers with her. I loved this book. When I read Rabbit's voice with lots of drama, my kids laugh at how ridiculous his complaining sounds. It's a good life lesson for all of us, as adults are also prone to complaining about life.
by Becky Davies. March 2017.

From Amazon: "Three little pugs named Bubbles, Bandit and Beauty live with their mother in the woods. One day, she tells them that its time for them to set out on their own. The pugs head out to build their own houses but can they steer clear of the Big, Bad Cat?"

My thoughts: This is one of those books that combines real photos with illustrations.

Queen Dog by Bridget Heos January 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "Queen Dog has ruled her castle with grace and majesty since she was a pup. Her people adore her. They provide her with delicious meals and shower her with attention. Lately, though, they have been a bit distracted and service has started to slip. Queen Dog tries her best to make do--but then a stranger moves into the castle! Who is this tiny newcomer commanding all the attention? A servant, or a pretender to the throne?"

My thoughts: This is a super cute story with only a few words on each page, told as a dog might see it. Many young couples get some sort of pet, then eventually a baby comes along and takes away the highest place of honor in the family (my husband and I got a cat while I was pregnant with Abby). It takes some getting used to. I could see this book being really enjoyable to share with a child who is going to become an older sibling, helping them see that life will be different but still good.

The Giant Jumperee
by Julia Donaldson & Helen OxenburyApril 2017. 32 pages.

From Amazon: "Rabbit arrives home one day to hear a loud voice coming from inside his burrow: "I'm the Giant Jumperee and I'm scary as can be!" shouts the stranger. Rabbit's friends Cat, Bear, and Elephant come to help, but they're no match for the mysterious, booming voice. But who is the Giant Jumperee? Find out in this new read-aloud classic from internationally bestselling author Julia Donaldson, beautifully brought to life by award-winning illustrator Helen Oxenbury."

My thoughts: I'm a big fan of Helen Oxenbury's illustrations in We're Going on a Bear Hunt and King Jack and the Dragon, so this one caught my eye right away. As I read it for the first time, my mind went back into librarian-mode and I found myself imagining it as a read-aloud using things like puppets, masks, or a flannelboard. It's not an earth-shattering story and is actually kind of boring on its own, but with props or at least fun voices it would be great as a read-aloud for young kids.

Recommended Age: 3-5 years
Naptastrophe!
by Jarrett Krosoczka May 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "From the creator of Punk Farm and the acclaimed Lunch Lady graphic novel series comes a hilarious romp about one little girl’s insistence that she does NOT need a nap. With vibrant, charming illustrations and a relatable main character, this hilarious story is the perfect reminder to parents and kids that you only miss out on the fun when you skip your nap!"

My thoughts: As I type this, I'm listening to my 7-month old refusing her afternoon nap. She often seems to think that naptime means she gets to miss out on fun stuff (as the youngest of 3 she always wants to be around people). This book has only a few words on each page, and is relatable to any family who has kids that still take naps.

Recommended Age: Amazon says 3-7 years, but I'd say more like 2-5.

If You Ever Want to Bring a Circus to the Library, Don't!
by Elise Parsley. May 2017. 40 pages.

From Amazon: "If you see a poster that says 'You Can Do Anything at the Library!', it is NOT giving you permission to put on a circus! But Magnolia doesn't see any problem with setting up her own big top. She's got a lot of gusto and one mean human cannonball routine. So what if her greatest show on Earth won't fit between the bookshelves? Elise Parsley's boldly expressive illustrations perfectly complement this mostly-librarian-approved guide on how to be everything BUT quiet in the library!"

My thoughts: This is the third book in the "Magnolia Says Don't!" series, and is just as silly as the other two. It encourages a few things that are rules in most libraries (making my kids say, "well of course you can't do that!!"), and subtly emphasizes that you can "do" anything in the library simply because of your imagination.
Wow, how can it be almost October already?! Here in Michigan we had a week of 90+ degree temps, just in time for the first day of fall... :-P October sure snuck up on me, but it's still time once again for #write31days.

I've had fun each October writing short book reviews each day. My local library has a section just for new books that have arrived in the last 6 months, typically published within the last year. I'll be following the same format as previous years, but the content will be completely new!

Ahhh summer. Days of sleeping in, playing outside, and lots of reading. I actually didn't finish a crazy amount of books this year, but with lots of Kindle-usage during baby feedings, I did stay on track with my goals. I read 10 books from June through August, putting me at 27 of 36.

Fiction/Historical Fiction

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman - I'm not usually a fan of contemporary fiction. I'm much more likely to pick up something set in a different time (past or future) or with elements of fantasy. Regular people living realistic lives in current times just doesn't appeal to me... However, this one was recommended by enough people, and has a current Goodreads rating of 4.34/5 over 21,000 ratings, so I thought I'd give it a try. I actually really really enjoyed it!!

Eleanor's social skills sometimes made me cringe, but usually in a way that I was simply feeling sorry for her. It was vaguely reminiscent of The Rosie Project. I enjoyed watching her "normal" change little by little, and even though I figured out a couple of the major twists before they were revealed, it was a very satisfying story. One of my favorites of this year! I'm surprised this is the author's debut novel. I can't wait to see what else she writes.

The Lost Sisterhood by Anne Fortier - This book contains two storylines set centuries apart -- one in modern Europe/North Africa/etc and one in ancient North Africa/Troy/etc. Not surprisingly I enjoyed the ancient storyline more. :) The modern story is of a woman who is a passionate believer in the ancient Amazon women warriors and goes on a journey to track down clues of their existence. The ancient story is a fictionalized version of what those Amazon women may have been like and where they journeyed.

I read this on my Kindle and didn't realize how long the book was. About the time I thought the story should be wrapping up I looked and was only barely 50% through it! I felt like there was quite a bit of unnecessary storyline, especially in the modern part of the story. I did push through because I wanted to see how the ancient story ended.

The one thing that I really enjoyed and appreciated about this book, though, was that it sparked an interest in looking up when the events of Troy took place -- I've always considered myself pretty knowledgeable about Bible history, but seeing on a timeline how those events and the rest of ancient history coincide was SUPER interesting.

The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict - My husband is a math and physics teacher, so naturally I know a lot about Albert Einstein. This book (very well researched!) takes a fictionalized look at how Einstein's school years and successful career affected others -- specifically the woman he eventually marries. I'll be honest, I didn't really like the book very much -- not because of the quality of writing, but because as the story progressed I found myself feeling sorry for Mitza and wanting to smack Albert.

Non-Fiction

Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World by Kristen Welch - The world we live in is full of messages of "You deserve this". It's a mindset that is very dangerous for our kids to develop. I slowly worked my way through this book, part of a chapter at a time each morning, over the course of a couple of months. I took lots of notes and gained lots of ideas of things to put into practice. As my oldest is solidly into elementary school (2nd grade), she is at a very teachable age for growing a grateful, servant heart. When I finished reading it I wanted to start back over again right away! I don't often buy books, but I'm very glad I bought this one.

#Struggles: Following Jesus in a Selfie-Centered World by Craig Groechel - Social media is one of those things for my generation that you either seem to love or hate. You either avoid it completely (or almost completely) or get sucked in and are addicted to it. I myself fall into the latter category. Sure I can take an occasional "screen Sabbath" (which I should do more often), but I do find myself reaching for my phone whenever I have even the slightest bit of downtime.

I love Craig's style of teaching -- we did one of his Bible studies in our small group a couple years ago -- and his sometimes blunt, to-the-point thoughts. I already know a lot of the "why" I shouldn't be connected online constantly, but often need the boost for "wanting" to disconnect, and that's what this book provides. Short chapters, lots of practical application, and more encouragement than guilt-tripping make me want to reach for this book over and over again.

Like a River Glorious (Gold Seer Trilogy #2) by Rae Carson - Earlier this year I picked up the first book in this series and was pleasantly surprised! I've always loved stories set in the mid-to-late 1800s, especially in the gold rush and Oregon Trail era. This series also includes just enough magic to be different yet believable. Book three is supposed to come out in October!

The Ranger's Apprentice #5-8 (The Sorcerer of the North, The Siege of Macindaw, Erak's Ransom, The Kings of Clonmel) by John Flanagan - I started this series when I was in a reading rut last spring and was searching for something YA that was available in OverDrive. I'm surprisingly hooked! Rather than being futuristic like so many YA books, it seems to be set more in the "Robin Hood era", with castles, longbows, knights, etc. The world that Flanagan has created gets expanded with each book, and has undertones of recognizable places like England and Scandinavia.

There are 12 books plus some companions, and I took a break after the first four earlier this year. I couldn't stay away long though, and came back when I needed a sweeping easy read this summer. I've grown to love the characters so much, I'm going to be sad when the series is over!

Summertime!!! Here's what we've been up to...

1. School finished for the summer on June 9
Rocky finished his 12th year of teaching, Abby finished 1st grade, and Ellie finished 4-year-old preschool. Now all five of us will be home together for 10 weeks! (I'm not sure whether I'm excited or anxious about that...)

2. We've already spent hours at the Lakehouse
Rocky's dad and stepmom live in the house that he grew up in from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. We get to enjoy sun & swimming, waterskiing, pontoon-riding, sailing, and even Legos and board games and cartoons when we need a break. Penny doesn't nap the greatest there yet, but we do alright.

3. Abby loves her new bike
For Abby's birthday at the end of May, we got her a new bike without training wheels. Even though we live in a tight neighborhood, she always wants to ride her bike two houses away to her friend's house, and she even rode with Rocky to our softball game one evening.

4. Abby & Ellie participated in Cheer and Tennis Camps
This week and next week the high school coaches and sports teams offer 4-day camps for the elementary kids to learn about various sports. Both girls chose to do cheer camp (mornings) and tennis camp (afternoons) this week -- Abby will also do basketball camp next week. Ellie is pretty shy in new situations, so while she will jump around and say the cheers at home, she often sat on the sidelines.
5. Penny turned 4 months old!
How did that happen?! While her days vary from lots of 30-min naps one day to three good solid naps the next, she has been only waking up once at night (and sometimes not at all if we're out and about late). She rolls onto her belly all the time, and while she knows how to roll to her back, she often either forgets or chooses not to until she yells loud enough for us to rescue her. She loooooves music, whether it's singing to her before bed (she smiles around her pacifier and it's adorable) or sitting on Rocky's lap while he plays piano.
