Usborne Review: Billie B. Brown series

Billie B. Brown by Sally Rippin
48 pages each. Paperback or Library-bound.

From Usborne: "Meet Billie B. Brown, brave, brilliant, bold, and bound to become your best friend! Brand-new readers will readily relate to this series of stand-alone, everyday adventures. Filled with true-to-life situations, warm family relationships, humorous illustrations and positive problem-solving, they’re taking the early reader scene by storm!"

My thoughts: I have heard numerous people compare these to the Junie B. Jones series, with the statement that the only thing the girls have in common is their middle initial. I have not read Junie B. myself, but have heard that she can be mean and snarky at times, and that is not what we want our 4-7 year olds learning! Each Billie B. book has an overall moral/lesson for Billie to learn, such as overcoming fear and living with a new sibling.

These are amazing first chapter books for beginning readers! My 5-year-old daughter went from phonics reader books to these. I read the first one out loud with her -- they are each 4 chapters long with no more than 50 words on a page -- then she took the next one and read it herself, asking for help with only a handful of words. Every time I place an Usborne order she asks if I can get another book for her. :) There are 15 in the series, with a couple new ones released each year. Once my daughter has read through all of them, we will move up to the Billie B. Mysteries series, which are a little more difficult.

Billie also has a friend named Jack, who has his own series of books -- the Hey Jack! series -- and both kids appear throughout each others' series.
