We've been fans of the Ladybug Girl books off and on, since we received Ladybug Girl and Bingo from the Imagination Library a few years ago. But suddenly Ellie decided she REALLY likes them, and we currently have five books from the series checked out from our library! Both of my girls are really getting into imaginative play (lately it's been Star Wars related...), and this particular book has been great for encouraging them to not be bossy and always telling everyone exactly how to play.

Surprise Island (Boxcar Children)

I discovered that Abby's teacher had been reading aloud the first book in the Boxcar Children series to her kindergarten class, and just finished on Friday. I remember loooooving the series as a kid, and knew I wanted to some day introduce my kids to it. I also want to get in the habit of reading aloud chapter books more, so this was a perfect opportunity! My church library has most of them, so we checked out book #2 and started it. While the image above is what my series looked like as a kid, this is what the books in the church library look like:

We received If I Built a Car as part of the Imagination Library a year or two ago, and loved the fun rhymes and imaginative descriptions and bright illustrations. When Ellie saw this one on the library shelf she just had to get it (okay, it was really me who saw it and had to get it. :) We read it every night at bedtime for at least a week, and Abby (age 5) even went so far as to draw pictures of what she imagined a fun new house would be like.

This is another Imagination Library book that got read over and over when we first received it, then disappeared on the shelf among the tons of other picture books we have. We pulled it out again recently and the girls love it as much now as they did then. We're in a time where bullying is a real thing that kids face every day, even in kindergarten and preschool (where my girls are). This book encourages them not to fight back and not to become a doormat, but to instead turn the situation into good.

I used this as part of my Thanksgiving storytime when I was at the library a year ago. It tells the basic Thanksgiving story, but is acted out by mice giving a play. Abby has been learning about the pilgrims all month in kindergarten, and even Ellie told us at Thanksgiving we eat turkey. It will be fun to teach them with more in-depth books someday (I'm sure I'll learn a few things!), but for now simple books like this one are great for explaining to them the concept of this holiday.

The girls picked this one out from the free box at a yard sale we stopped at -- the copy we got was actually an advanced reader paperback. It almost makes me want to do more with getting ARC's. It's a really cute story about a boy who lives and breathes cars sooo much (his friends are even named Chevy, Mini, and Kia, which I think is hilarious -- and his own name is Otto -- get it? auto?) that one day he wakes up and actually IS a car. A great little tale about trying new things!

Yup you read that copyright date correctly. This book came out when I was 6 months old! I had completely forgotten about the Word Bird series until I saw them at the library -- I LOVED them as a kid. We picked this one out last week because it was Ellie's birthday. You'd be really lucky to find this one for sale somewhere, so check your library for it. It goes through all the months of the year, as Word Bird asks when his birthday is. My kids love adding things to each month: "Papa said 'August is the time for picnics and fishing'"... and Ellie's birthday. :)

I used to do more reading aloud with Abby last year, when she would rest in the afternoons and wasn't in school yet. But now that naps are over for both her and her sister, we tend to choose picture books as bedtime reading so Ellie can stay focused. I got this book on audio from the library, and a couple times over the last few weeks have played it while doing household chores as the girls play nearby. But now the audio is due back to the library and we're only a third of the way done...
Do you read chapter books aloud to your kids? How old are they? Should I try to do it more, or is my easily-distractable, just-turned-3-year-old-Ellie too young yet?

We got this one from the library the last time we visited (it's SO weird to not be working there anymore...). It's a super cute story about a girl's interactions with her new little brother, and it's just impossible to not read without a southern drawl! :) I have yet to grow tired of reading it, I have enjoyed it so much!

Apparently my kids don't care that the first day of summer is a week away... or maybe that's why they keep choosing this one. We have a couple of these MSB Scholastic Reader books that I've picked up at yard sales. We love watching the old shows on Netflix, and I was Ms. Frizzle for Halloween last year! This level 2 reader is still a little difficult for Abby to read by herself, but as she practices it's getting easier. As a science nerd I love love love the simple facts that MSB teaches - this one includes how snow is made up in the atmosphere.

We're doing some cleaning and purging for a garage sale next week, and I finally bit the bullet and went through the girls' bookshelves. We've been given SO many books over the last 5 years, and I was sick of picking them up off the floor every day - Ellie has a tendency to search for a specific book, and as she does she takes one off the shelf to see if it's what she's looking for, then puts it on the floor when it's not the right one.

It is SO hard to get rid of books. Many of them have specific memories. But as you can see from the "after" picture, we still saved a ton of them. I asked my husband to look through the boxes and pull out any that he wanted to save too. And after the sale we'll probably do one more look-through then donate the rest.

Read my full review here. Do you ever wonder why some kids pick certain books and just love them so much that they ask you to read them every. single. day. for weeks?? This is one of those books in our house. At least it's a collection of stories, so we can get by with only reading one or two different ones each day. :)
Little Loon and Papa by Toni Buzzeo. May 2004
Ellie affectionately calls this one the "peep peep where's Papa??" book. Little Loon can't figure out how to dive the way Papa does, and he eventually gets sick of diving lessons and swims away when Papa isn't looking. But the world can be a scary place without the comfort of a parent close by.

Abby received this one last week from DPIL (I'm so sad! She only has one more month until she's 5 and stops getting monthly books!). It's been fun to introduce a "classic" to my kids.

The Little Critter books were some of my absolute favorites as a kid. Anytime I see them at garage sales or used book sales I grab them up. Little Critter can't find his baseball mitt, so his mom tells him he should clean his room...

My #bookwormproblem for the month? I want the kids' bookshelves to look like this:
But most of the time things look like this:
I'm really glad that they love books so much, but how is it that 1) we've obtained SO many books in the last five years and 2) they always seem to end up EVERYWHERE??
Here are some of the girls' favorites this week:
Amelia Bedelia's First Field Trip by Herman Parish. June 2011
I remember loving Amelia Bedelia books as a kid, and thought it was neat that Parish has started making bigger, colorful picture books about Amelia's earlier years as a kid in school. She still has the quirkiness that we all know and love, and my own kids are learning the real meaning of phrases we understand and take for granted. Abby chose this one at the library last week, she has a field trip coming up soon that I will be able to go on with her (now that I'm done at the library! I've missed the others she's had this school year) and she is absolutely thrilled I can go.
The Golden Egg by A.J. Wood. February 2000.
This was a gift from a baby shower before Abby was born. I'm pretty sure it's the book that initiated my love for good rhyming kids books. Little Duck goes looking for a golden egg, encountering many animal friends and eggs of other colors. It has flapped pages to look behind, and I think the ending would make any woman smile.
The Story of Easter by Patricia A. Pingry. Board Book edition February 2011.
I got this book for the girls a year or two ago to help explain Easter to them in an extremely simple way. I'm sure by next year we'll be moving on to something more in depth (we've been reading the Easter story from the Jesus Calling Bible Storybook at dinnertime), but they have been asking for this one every night since they knew it was Easter week.

This is one of many many books we've received from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (hey that's part of the reason we have SO many books -- each girl gets one in the mail every month!). I sometimes feel like the boy in the story, trying to read while someone keeps interrupting.Have you read any of these? How do you teach your kids to put their books away??

The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat. April 2014
Rocky picked this one off the new books shelf at the library last week, as his Algebra class is talking about imaginary numbers. It was the Caldecott winner for 2015. Beekle is an imaginary friend who goes in search of a child to be his perfect match. I've heard my girls playing "I'll be Beekle, you be Alice!"
Fancy Nancy Pajama Day by Jane O'Connor. June 2009
We have a small boxed set of Fancy Nancy books, and this is the current favorite. Nancy encounters a dilemma when she wants to wear her elegant nightgown but her best friend wants her to wear their matching pajamas.
Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems. June 2011.
We received this one for Christmas, and it makes my girls giggle every time. Of course giving Gerald a deep elephant-y voice helps the goofiness. I've seen Ellie paging through this one "reading" it out loud.
What's That Mittens? by Lola Schaefer. June 2009.
